Monthly Archives: February 2020

We had a wonderful week celebrating the beginning of the Lenten Season.  Students bellies were filled with delicious pancakes served by our wonderful parent council, we received ashes as a school community as Father Peter facilitated and we encouraged each other to be kind and spread joy as we honoured Pink Shirt Day.  Each week at St. Michael School is filled with love, comfort and joy as we continue to recognize that St. Michael is a GREAT place to be!

Please be reminded that our Grade 2 students will be making a very important Sacrament this Wednesday at St. Clement’s Church at 7pm.  They will be making their First Reconciliation.  Please continue to keep our students in your prayers as this is a very important time in their Catholic journey.  A special thank you to the teachers who continue to prepare and help students understand their Catholic faith.

It was an incredible day as our Catholic School Advisory Council volunteered and cooked over 600 pancakes for our entire school community.  The hallways smelled delicious as we entered school and students smiles were glowing as they filled their bellies with fluffy pancakes.  Each class also participated in prayer and a learning powerpoint in which teachers helped them to understand the meaning behind Shrive Tuesday.  It was a great day!

It is an incredible honour to be a Catholic Principal and my pride was beaming for the staff and students as we prepared for the Lenten Season by coming together in community for our Ash Wednesday liturgy.  Father Peter led the spiritual ministry as our entire school community received ashes.  Teachers helped them prepare ahead of time and encouraged them to make their Lenten promises.  Lent is a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving and the students of St. Michael’s are all in!  We encourage you to ask your son/daughter how they contributing to the Lent.

Our students – and staff – wore their pink shirts with pride as they messaged to everyone that our Angel community welcomes all!  We believe that we should Be a Buddy and NOT A BULLY!  Classrooms were shown a video on the origins of Pink Shirt day and students were encouraged to pledge their commitment to encourage kindness and include all.  They were also encouraged to stand up to bullies and as a school community we can all work to create a more inclusive and caring space for everyone!

Get those smiling faces ready!  Picture Day is here for our Grade 8 Graduates, SK graduates and Siblings photos.  Pictures will start first thing in the morning and will continue until the photographer is complete.  Pictures are offered through Lifetouch and you will be able to order online if you choose.

PLEASE ensure that your child is being sent to school with proper clothing for outside weather.  Temperatures can vary during the day and we are seeing MANY students come to school without gloves, boots or hats daily.  We do not have these onsite and are unable to provide them for students.  Nor are they able to stay in due to proper attire as we do not have the supervision to accommodate.  If you are struggling and need support around acquiring the items needed, please contact the office.  Thank you in advance for your support and in ensuring your child is warm!

As the weather is colder, we see many parents dropping their children off at the front of the school.  The school parking lot is not open to parents in the morning prior to school.  The only parents that are able to park are those that are utilizing the Kiss and Drop (JK/SK parents only).  Parking is located at the back of the school yard on Winterhalt Drive.  You are also free to park on Concession at the front of the school and walk the children to the back of the school for drop off.  We have supervisors out front and they will be stopping cars to ensure that this is monitored.  Please understand that we want to ensure that all of our Angels are safe when coming to school.

There will not be school for students on Thursday March 5th due to job action.  Extended Day programs will continue to run as usual.

Please note that when buses are cancelled for inclement weather – this means that they are cancelled the entire day.  If your child takes the bus you would have to provide transportation for them to come to and from school on these days if your choose.  Thank you.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) has announced that all of its members will be engaging in a one-day strike on Thursday, March 5, 2020. This decision affects all Catholic district school boards in Ontario.

As a result of this strike, all Waterloo Catholic District School Board elementary and secondary schools will be closed on March 5.

In addition to the closure of all WCDSB elementary and secondary schools on March 5, please note the following:

Some programs offered at the WCDSB’s St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres will be cancelled on March 5 —  they are:

  • Hairstyling will be closed
  • Culinary Arts will be closed
  • Secondary School Credit Day School will be closed
  • Correspondence services will be closed
  • Guidance services will be closed.

All other St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres programs will be running as per their normal schedules.

All WCDSB extended day programs will be open for the day as usual (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for students currently registered in the program.

Community use of schools activities will continue as scheduled.

OECTA’s previously announced job actions will remain in effect before and after March 5.

As before, we remain hopeful the two sides will return to the bargaining table quickly and will come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.

Just a reminder that we will be celebrating Pink Shirt Day tomorrow – THURSDAY!  Please have your son/daughter wear pink to honour this great initiative.  Thank you in advance!

Just a reminder that we have our Grade 7 Confirmation mtg tonight starting at 7pm at St. Clements Church.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers!

Close to 600 pancakes were served to your children this morning! This enormous challenge was accomplished by the wonderful parent volunteers in our St. Michael Community!  Our parents always rise to the occasion with such enthusiasm and grace!

Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it is the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, a time of going without indulgences so that we may prayerfully remember Jesus’ sacrifice. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren’t allowed in Lent.

Thanks you also to those who continued to support our eco-initiative and brought in their own reusable plate!

We will continue our Lenten journey tomorrow with our Ash Wednesday Mass.  Lent is upon us!

Just a reminder tomorrow is Pancake Tuesday, Students will enjoy pancakes in the morning. As we are an Eco-School, students are encouraged and reminded to bring their own plate and fork. Thank you for your assistance with this.  Looking forward to enjoying some pancakes as we prepare for the beginning of the Lenten season.

OECTA Strike Cancelled

All WCDSB Schools OPEN on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24th, 2020

OECTA has cancelled rotating strikes scheduled for next week.

As a result, all WCDSB schools will be open and running on their regular schedules on Monday February 24th.

See you on Monday Angels!

ANGEL UPDATE – Feb 24-28

We are looking forward to a great week ahead for our Angels!

There is so much to celebrate and the student smiles show it all!  Take a look at our staff that go above and beyond to run club/committees over their lunch hour for our students.  Showcased is our knitting club, Dungeons and Dragons and Volleyball!  Smiles everywhere!

We are celebrating Black History Month and showcasing our amazing thoughts and dreams that are inspired by those before us!  We know that we all belong and will continue to promote and celebrate diversity in all we do at St. Michael’s!

On Tuesday February 25th our Catholic School Parent Advisory Council will be in to cook and serve the entire school community pancakes to recognize Shrove Tuesday.  Pancakes were traditionally eaten on the day before Ash Wednesday because they were a way to use up eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Many people “give something up” during Lent as a way to prepare for Easter.

Each class will be served pancakes in their classrooms.  Students will b served throughout the morning.  The pancakes are a “treat” and not a lunch replacement. Students who bring a lunch to school need to bring a lunch on this day as well. If your child has an allergy to pancake mix and syrup, please be sure to inform their classroom teacher to make alternate arrangements.

We are asking all students to please bring in a PLATE and UTENSILS for their pancakes. By reducing the amount of garbage, we can continue to be stewards of the environment. Please put your plate and utensils in a Ziploc!  Thank you for your support!

We will be having an Ash Wednesday Liturgy on February 26th at 9:30AM. Father Peter will be presiding over this very important event which marks the beginning of Lent. All parents are welcome to attend.

What can you do to prepare your family for Jesus’ Death and Resurrection? Busted Halo is a great resource that is online that can be utilized to help explain Lent to your children. Please click on the link below to access.

Lent in 3 Minutes

“PINK SHIRT DAY” 2020 Date Change

The St. Michael Pink Shirt Day has been moved to Thursday February 27th so as not to conflict with Ash Wednesday.

From its humble beginnings in 2007 in small-town Nova Scotia, Pink Shirt Day has spread across the globe as a way to take a stand against bullying and to show support for those who have been affected by it in schools, workplaces, homes, and online.  Last year alone, people in almost 180 countries shared their support of Pink Shirt Day through social media posts and donations.

Please wear pink on Thursday to support this very worthwhile cause. We encourage everyone at the Waterloo Catholic District School Board to practice kindness and wear pink to school or work to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying. The focus for 2020 is “lift each other up.”
