It will sure be a busy week at St. Michael’s!  We have lots going on as we enter into Black History Month, World Read Aloud Day and the introduction of our new Umbrella Theme of Purpose!  Students will be engaged in all sorts of learning and many hands on activities that push them towards academic success!

We will be learning about prominent black figures in our school community this month to celebrate and honour Black History Month.  We will be sharing announcements and completing classroom activities to showcase the incredible contributions to our world that were made by African American people.  Continue to ask your children at home about their learning so they can feel the pride and reinforce the learning they receive at school.

We are preparing the students for the new Umbrella Theme of Purpose at are school assembly on Wednesday.  Classes will be learning about how to live a life with purpose and we will continue to recognize and celebrate students who live out the theme of the month at our monthly assembly!

Please read the article attached in the following link to learn more about this important Umbrella Skill.

Just a reminder that our teachers’ association, OECTA, will be holding a one day Job Action on Tuesday, February 4th, which means there will be no school for students. Our Extended Day Program will be open for those students who are registered with the program.  School is open on all other days of the week.

On Wednesday, our Angels had an opportunity to discuss Mental Health Issues on the annual Bell Let’s Talk Day. Our amazing student leadership team had been preparing the students all week with announcements, quizzes and posters to create awareness about mental health.  They also visited classes to deliver important messages to each classroom about supporting each other, being ourselves and that it is okay to ask for help. Thanks to Mrs. Claessens and Mr. Radford and the Student Leadership Team for their awesome leadership in this very worthwhile initiative!

In recognition of World Read Aloud Day, and to demonstrate our commitment to reading aloud as a powerful and transformative act, staff will be invited to Drop Everything and Read on Wednesday February 5 at 9:15am.

At this time – each class will spend a short (5-10 minutes) time of reading aloud that will occur in each classroom of the school, at the same time. The whole school community participating at once!  At St. Michael’s, our commitment to literacy is strong and what a great way to showcase it through this global initiative!

We had such a treat on Friday morning when all of our Early Years and Primary Divisions participated in the Jiggy Jump Presentation.  Students were dancing and exercising all morning.  I heard one Grade 2 students say that he was “exhausted” at the end of the performance.  At St. Michael’s we are committed to being a Healthy School and are always looking for ways to incorporate healthy habits into our daily school life!  Thank you to Ms. Staples for organizing this event for all!
